iPhone 14: What’s New?

Apple recently introduced the iPhone 14. Let’s take a look at what’s new. The most affordable model costs $799 and replaces the previous iPhone 13 mini. It features a 6.1-inch display and aluminum sides. If you want to go bigger, the 14 Plus features a 6.7-inch display for $899.

Last year, a display this large would’ve cost $1,100. Both the 14 and 14 Plus are available in five colors; Midnight, Starlight, Product Red, Purple, and Blue. Their headlining features include Emergency SOS via satellite, which allows you to text emergency services if you don’t have cell service or wifi. For this to work, you need to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky. After initiating a report, you’ll be prompted to answer questions about your emergency. Then, your iPhones needs to be pointed upwards, so it can guide you in the direction of an available satellite.

Once found, establishing a connection can take more than a minute if you’re underneath some trees, or as little as 15 seconds if there are no obstructions. Once connected, iPhone will automatically send your answers, location, Medical ID if available, and battery level to a dispatcher. Any texts sent via satellite will be three times smaller to speed up communication.

If a local emergency service provider doesn’t accept texts, then Apple will use their relay centers to call them directly on your behalf. Another new safety feature is Crash Detection. Thanks to 1-million hours of real-world crash data, a new high g-force accelerometer, and a new a high dynamic range gyroscope, iPhone can recognize when you’ve experienced an accident.

Then call 911 and notify your emergency contacts. The main camera lens features a larger sensor and aperture that let in 49 percent more light. This delivers two-times better low light photos, and two times faster night mode exposures. And thanks to improved image processing Apple calls their Photonic Engine, the wide-angle and selfie cameras also delver two-times better low light photos.

When it comes to video, a new Action mode simulate the effects of a gimbal. Which stabilizes shaky footage. Plus, cinematic mode can now capture 4k footage at 24 frames per second.

The A15 Bionic chip inside iPhone 14 and 14 Plus is the same one feature on the 13. Expect for an updated internal design that delivers better thermal efficiency. And in the US, physical SIM card trays have been removed. Forcing users to adopt eSIM. So that’s what’s new with the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.
